Classification

There are millions of different living things. All living things are divided up into five main groups:

Plants Animals Fungi Bacteria Protoctista

These five groups are called kingdoms. The plant kingdom and animal kingdom are the two largest. Plants are organisms which can make their own food using energy from the sun and animals cannot. For this unit you need to know how the animal kingdom is divided up into groups. Animals can be divided into two main groups: invertebrates (animals without backbones) and invertebrates (animals with backbones). The main groups in the animal kingdom are shown in the diagram below:

Try to learn to identify the groups which have a little bit written about them.

There are five sorts of verbebrate: Mammals, Birds, Amphibians, Reptiles and Fish.

Invertebrates are divided up into eight main groups: Arthropods, Molluscs, Echinoderms, Jellyfish, Flatworms, Roundworms, Sponges and Annelids (Earthworms). Most animal species are Arthropods. This group includes: Crustaceans, Insects, Arachnids (spiders) and Centipedes and Millipedes.

The arthropods are shown in more detail below:
